5th Grade Artwork
Fifth grade students will be using a lot of their art knowledge this year to create projects that will reflect themselves individually. Many projects will be independent studies in which students will make choices about subject matters, line types, shapes, color families, textures, art media and art tools to create individual works of art. This year students will be using a variety of materials including: paint, tissue, graphic design, clay, plaster and oil pastel to create wonderful artworks. Students will also be learning about different artists and will create artwork based in those artists' style. Fifth grade is a big year because this when where students put all the art concepts together to create one-of-a-kind artworks.

Art Principle Prints
5th grade artists are learning about art principles for this project. Art principles use combinations of art elements to make artworks more interesting. Each student chose one art principle to demonstrate through the process of printmaking. Students created abstract sketches that illustrated either balance, emphasis, rhythm, contrast, unity, or variety by using simplified shapes and lines. These sketches were then turned into print blocks using a collage technique with Styrofoam. Finally, students used oil pastels to add color and value to their prints to help exhibit their chosen art principle.
Rubric (How was graded)
1. Did you create an interesting abstract artwork that demonstrates your art principle?
2. Did you collage correctly to create your print block?
3. Did you print correctly?
4. Did you use oil pastel correctly to add color and value to your artwork?
At Home Discussion
Looking at the artwork below, what art principles can you see? How are they being used?
